Description

The world is facing great challenges in meeting rising demands for basic commodities and services, while reducing and minimizing the impact of human activities on the earth’s global environment and climate. Nanotechnology, which is the synthesis and application of functional materials through control of matter at the nanometer scale, has emerged as a versatile platform that could provide efficient, cost effective and environmentally acceptable solutions to the global development sustainability challenges. Nanotechnology can be harnessed to address some of Africa’s most critical developmental problems.

Africa and the developing world bear disproportionately higher load of global developmental challenges. Nanotechnology therefore suits them the most. Africa needs nanotechnology more than any other world region. For any meaningful and sustainable development however, African countries must tackle the leading developmental challenges namely: food insecurity, environmental pollution, ecosystem degradation, inefficient energy production and affordable healthcare, poor access to clean water and sanitation and the disease burden. Nanotechnology provides the best appropriate interventions.

Artificial Intelligence is a new revolutionary technology that has many applications across the entire global industry, driving Business Intelligence to a higher level. It is a new phenomenon whose applications in many different sectors and industries, has revolutionized handling any huge volume of data by extracting optimum value from the data. Artificial Intelligence is intelligence demonstrated by machines. It is a wide-ranging tool that enables people to rethink how they gather information, analyze the data, and utilize the resulting insight to have a better informed decision. AI is increasingly a part of our everyday environment in systems including virtual assistants, expert systems, and self-driving cars.
Africa is slowly but surely catching up with developed nations in embracing both Nanotechnology and Artificial Intelligence.
Convergence between Nanotechnology and Artificial Intelligence and can shape the path for various technological developments in the upcoming 5th industrial revolution. For instance, in the field of medicine, integrating artificial intelligence and nanotechnology enhances better precision delivery of cancer medicine, thus realizing the goal of precision medicine. Africa and Kenya in particular should board this amazing technological vehicle, for sustainable development.
