Description
Future wireless and smart-energy networks must jointly manage information uncertainty, fading, spectral resources, reliability, latency, and communication energy. Conventional energy efficiency measured in bit/J quantifies delivered rate per unit power but does not explicitly represent source uncertainty, the fraction of information recovered at the receiver, or simultaneous spectrum and channel utilization. This paper develops a unified entropy-aware framework and proposes a dimensionless Shannon Entropy–Energy Efficiency Index (SEEEI) that combines normalized source entropy, mutual-information recovery, channel utilization, spectral efficiency, conventional energy efficiency, and total-power efficiency. The model is evaluated for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), Rayleigh fading, and Rician fading, and is extended to a representative 5G-style orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) link with cyclic-prefix and pilot overheads, power-amplifier inefficiency, and circuit power. Repeated Monte Carlo simulations are used to estimate BPSK bit-error rate (BER) with 95% confidence intervals. Ergodic capacity, effective OFDM spectral efficiency, conventional bit/J efficiency, and four SEEEI weighting profiles are then compared. For the representative Rayleigh model, conventional energy efficiency peaks near 0 dB at about 2.90 Mbit/J, whereas equal-weight SEEEI peaks near 5 dB at about 0.65 because the improvement in information recovery and spectral utilization compensates for moderate additional power. At higher SNR, reliability continues to improve but the logarithmic capacity gain cannot offset the increasing power cost, causing SEEEI to decline. Weight-sensitivity analysis confirms that the preferred operating region shifts systematically with energy, reliability, or throughput priorities. The proposed metric therefore supplies information not contained in raw bit/J alone and offers a configurable basis for entropy-aware resource allocation in OFDM, IoT, 5G/6G, and smart-energy communication systems.
