Description

Centella asiatica (C. asiatica) plant is basically one of the many medicinal herbs that have been used in many parts of the world to treat most of the diseases such as the skin diseases, central nerves systems diseases, wound healings among others. In folklore medicine, C. asiatica is used to treat dental cavities, periodontal diseases and other oral-diseases that are caused by bacteria. Despite the availability of some treatments in clinical use, the escalating resistance to antibiotics calls for ongoing search for alternative products. In this study, the phytochemicals compounds of C. asiatica were isolated guided by TLC and about 700g of the plant sample was successively fractionated using different solvents. Bioassay-guided fractionation was used in testing isolated compounds that are active against dental disease-causing microorganism. Climate change has also greatly influence the activity of anti-bacterial plants especially Centella asiatica plants have become scarce due to drought which has occured frequently annually in various parts of the world. Climate change also influences antibacterial effectiveness of the medicinal plants because environmental conditions can alter the concentration and composition of plant chemicals, the antibacterial activity of extracts may also change. Hence in this study, pure active compounds of Centella asiatica plant will be characterized using a variety of analytical methods such as FTIR, GC-MS/HRMS and NMR spectroscopy. Apart from validating the traditional usage of the plant as a remedy for various conditions, this work will also lead to discovery of novel compounds with potential therapeutic properties against the dental plaque and periodontal diseases. C. asiatica shows promising potential as a natural anti-bacterial agent against periodontal pathogens. Further research should investigate its efficacy and interactions with climate related environmental factors through controlled laboratory and clinical uses. The antibacterial activity of C.asiatica suggests that it could be explored as natural and potentially affordable source antimicrobial agents for managing periodontal infections.
