Description

Areas covered here include:

Indigenous knowledge systems; Climate change dynamics has a major impact on ecosystems and makes indigenous knowledge relevant for mitigation and adoption. This conference invites abstracts and papers on farming practices like livestock rearing, afforestation, intercropping, mixed cropping, terrace farming, shorter product value chains, reduction on food loss and waste, water reservoirs, protected spring sources, and wetland conservation among others.

Culture and religion; Practices that are significant to environmental conservation are traditionally passed down generations. Natural systems worth mentioning include cultural shrines. Forests acted as cultural spaces, as source food, costumes, musical instruments (e.g bamboo). Forests were also a natural habitat for traditional/herbal medicines. Coastal communities also relied heavily on marine ecosystems for food, traditional medicine, trade and other forms of livelihood.

Climate change and health; Contributions that highlight incidences of, impact and adaptation strategies to climate change induced diseases are encouraged. Research topics focusing on public health also fall under this category.

Food security and impact on livelihoods; Climate change is a major driver of food insecurity. Floods and storms, droughts, landslides, forest fires are all contributory factors to food insecurity - vis a vis access, availability and stability. These factors lead to an irrational or disproportionate utilization of food impacting negatively on nutrition, health and livelihoods. Participants are invited to share work, knowledge and technologies and innovations towards food security, adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Climate justice; Icrecc 2026 invites participants to present work touching on climate justice, recognising vulnerability of local communities, indigenous communities and low income nations to the risks of climate change. Presentations can highlight emerging challenges and opportunities in the existing justice frameworks.

Climate financing; Private, financial and governmental institutions are encouraged to present locally led mechanisms and solutions tailored towards resilient ecosystems. Emphasis will be focussed on improving local communities’ adaptation to climate change. Presentations can include briefs and working papers highlighting financing models, products and services that foster sustainability and resilience. Contributions can highlight active financial models managed by local authorities.

Environmental Social Governance; Investors and corporates are encouraged to submit contributions bordering on social frameworks, sustainable investments and corporate social responsibility.

Indigenous knowledge systems, culture and religion
    Abstract

The traditional knowledge of a people or society is their indigenous knowledge (IK). Ensuring that indigenous knowledge does not become extinct is the goal of many cultural heritage institutions, in tandem with the resident communities. Indigenous knowledge adoption and preservation, therefore, is a cultural heritage activity that is treasured abundantly by the Keiyo Community of Kenya....

    Abstract
Climate change is increasingly affecting agricultural productivity, household incomes, food security and rural livelihoods in Uganda. Smallholder farmers face growing exposure to erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, floods, land degradation, pests and diseases, while limited access to finance, climate information, appropriate technologies and markets constrains their capacity to...

Malaria is a major challenge in the drylands of Nigeria, where transmission is strongly conditioned by climatic instability, environmental fragility and socio-demographic pressures. This study conducted a multi-temporal geo-epidemiological analysis of malaria incidence across Yobe State, aiming to identify climatic–environmental drivers of malaria heterogeneity and delineate spatial hotspots...

Accurate rainfall onset prediction is essential for agricultural resilience across Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and Iringa. This study evaluates the traditional 4-Season temperate model against RegCM4 (regional), CAN-SIAM (climatological), and ECMWF/IFS (global). Results reveal a significant predictive gap, with observed onset exhibiting strong interannual and regional variability, while...

Food security and impact on livelihoods
    Abstract

While global climate discourse increasingly acknowledges the gendered impacts of environmental degradation, legal frameworks in developing nations remain trapped in a paradigm of "physical survival," prioritizing food security and basic water access over sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). This paper examines the systemic failure of Kenya's legal frameworks to protect the girl child...

    Article / Full paper

Ecological systems in Eastern Africa are increasingly embedded in hydro-political contestations, where scarcity, access, and uneven distribution transform water into a strategic resource through which states, communities, and non-state actors negotiate power, identity, and survival mechanisms. These dynamics intensify existing environmental, socio-economic and political inequalities,...
